Do this first
- Shut off the main water valve. It’s usually where the water line enters the house, often on a basement or crawl-space wall at the front of the home.
- If water is near outlets or appliances, keep clear and switch off power to that area if it’s safe to do so.
- Open a faucet on the lowest floor to drain pressure from the lines.
- Call 667-371-1242 and take photos for your insurance.
What we fix
- Burst and frozen pipes
- Pinhole leaks in copper lines
- Leaking shut-off valves, supply lines and fittings
- Leaks under sinks, behind toilets and at water heaters
- Outdoor faucets (hose bibs) that split after a freeze
Maryland winters and frozen pipes
Pipes in exterior walls, crawl spaces, garages and unheated basements are the most likely to freeze during a cold snap. Before winter, disconnect garden hoses and shut off and drain outdoor faucets from inside. If a pipe has frozen, don’t use an open flame to thaw it.
Common questions
Where is my main water shut-off?
In most Maryland homes it’s where the water line comes in: a basement or crawl-space wall at the front of the house, near the water meter, or in a utility closet in townhomes and condos.
Can you find a hidden leak?
Yes. Signs include a water bill that jumps, the sound of running water when everything is off, damp drywall or a warm spot on the floor. MJ tracks it down before opening anything up.
Should I repair one leak or repipe?
One leak usually means one repair. Repeated pinhole leaks in copper or leaks in old galvanized pipe can mean it’s time to look at repiping.
